Dr Bertram grew up in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in California, where she and her sisters gained appreciation for nature and all animals as they hiked the hills with their family dogs, caught and brought home a variety of lizards and snakes (our poor mom!), and observed coyotes, bobcats, hawks and deer, in our own backyard.
Dr Bertram began working after school as an assistant for their family veterinarian while in high school, and soon knew she had found her future career. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a bachelor's degree in Zoology, and received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine degree from Oregon State University.
Early in her career she volunteered veterinary services at the Minnesota Zoo in Minneapolis, and for the High Desert Museum in Oregon, performing surgeries and dental care on primates, big cats, ungulates, wild birds, snakes, bats and even neutered a porcupine! She also worked a side gig as a freelance writer when her children were young, with over 50 articles published in veterinary journals and pet magazines.
Dr Bertram resided for many years in Bend, Oregon, where she and her husband raised her two children on a 5 acre ranch with horses, dogs, cats, goats, steers, and chickens. In 2015, she and her husband escaped the long, snowy winters of Central Oregon, and moved to sunny Tucson, where they have happily settled.
At Spanish Trail Pet Clinic, Dr Bertram enjoys performing surgery and dentistry, and evaluating her patients from a holistic perspective: considering lifestyle, diet, exercise, training, and preventative care. She is passionate about nutrition and providing the best quality of life, especially for senior pets.
In her spare time, she keeps active with her two rescued dogs, and riding her beautiful and opinionated Morgan mare. She also enjoys cooking with loads of exotic spices, gardening, and together with her husband: exploring the beautiful desert mountains and grasslands of Southern Arizona on foot and on horseback.
